Detailed Description

Business Impact:

This vulnerability affects most of modern Microsoft Windows operating systems, including Microsoft Vista.   Successful exploitation of this issue would provide an attacker with complete control over the endpoint target.  Note that the vulnerable versions of Movie Maker are installed by default on Windows XP as well as Vista.  Although no public exploits are currently available, customers that are using the affected operating systems should consider immediate deployment of patches and protection for this issue..

Technical Description:

Microsoft Movie Maker is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking when processing malicious Movie Maker (.mswmm) files. By persuading a victim to open a specially-crafted Movie Maker project file, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system or cause the application to crash..
