Notification Type: IBM Internet Security Systems Protection Alert
Notification Date: Jan 05, 2007
Notification Version: 2.1

Name:

Adobe Acrobat Reader Plugin PDF file cross-site scripting and code execution

Public disclosure/
In the wild date:
Jan 03, 2007 (vuln)
Classification(s): vulnerability
CVE:

CVE-2007-0044 and CVE-2007-0045

Description:

Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat are vulnerable to cross-site scripting due to their acceptance of Javascript as a value for parameters passed to a PDF. This was intended to be valid functionality to allow Javascript to be used to enhance a PDF document. However, this functionality can be injected from any source and be abused for malicious purposes. Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to the typical ramifications of XSS (e.g. session hijacking, theft of credentials, etc.).  However, combinations of certain versions of web browsers and Adobe may result in remote code execution and control of the victim with the privileges of the currently logged on user.

Detailed Description

Business Impact: A successful compromise of an affected version of an Adobe Acrobat Reader Plugin leaves the attacker in complete control of the targeted host, which can result in exposure of confidential information, loss of productivity, and further network compromise.

  Exploitability: High
Remediation Level: Official Fix
Report Confidence: Confirmed
Affected Products: The following Adobe versions are affected when used in conjunction with a web browser:
  • Adobe Systems Incorporated: Adobe Acrobat 7.0.8 and earlier
  • Adobe Systems Incorporated: Adobe Acrobat 3D Any version
  • Adobe Systems Incorporated: Adobe Reader 7.0.8 and earlier
  • Technical Description:

Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat accept Javascript as a value passed to a parameter for a PDF document in a URL. This parameter does not need to actually be valid or recognized by the document for the Javascript to be executed. This allows an attacker to leverage any PDF document hosted on any site to accomplish a cross-site scripting attack. This attack would come in the form of typical XSS attacks (e.g. phishing emails, links posted to social networking sites, etc.)

It was later disclosed that the URL can point to a local file on a user's system. This causes the PDF document to be opened in a less restrictive security zone, thus opening up the possibilities for exploitation.

Remedy: Upgrade to the latest version of the Adobe Acrobat Reader Plugin (8.0.0 or later), available from the Adobe Acrobat Reader Plugin Web site. See References.
