remote exploit VML_Detected (when enabled, blocks all VML) Aug 16, 2007

Detailed Description

Business Impact: This vulnerability allows an attacker to obtain complete control over the target system and could be exploited through a malicious web page or email.  IBM X-Force considers this to be one of the most severe vulnerabilities in this month’s Microsoft patch bundle because it could be used in an email worm. IBM X-Force advises users to disable VML in their browsers.  VML is rarely used on the web and several exploits have targeted it over the past 12 months. CVE-2006-5745 is one such vulnerability, which IBM X-Force researchers discovered being exploited in the wild.

Technical Description: The Microsoft Windows Vector Markup Language (VML) implementation is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the vector graphics link library (vgx.dll). By persuading a victim to visit a malicious Web page or open a specially-crafted HTML email using Microsoft Internet Explorer, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with the privileges of the victim.
