Detailed Description

Business Impact:

This vulnerability is in a core component of most modern Microsoft Windows operating systems.  (Server platforms are not vulnerable.) This is quite commonly required codec that enables you to view video on your PC. If the victim browses to a malicious webpage or opens a malicious AVI movie with Media Player they could be susceptible.  By enticing a victim to view a specially crafted video file the attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user.

Technical Description:

Microsoft Windows has a memory corruption vulnerability in the Cinepak codec’s video decompression routine.  Exploitation of the vulnerability could lead to code execution in the context of the current user.  By enticing a victim to view a specially crafted video file the attacker could execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user.
